Two railroad workers were left to guard the pumping station. These men were killed by Indians in a matter of days. The railroad them established another pumping station, this time about 7 miles father east, on Big creek. A detachment of solders from fort hays was sent to guard this new station. Ellis was about to be born. The first permeate building in the newly formed town was a limestone hotel which served as a depot and also a stopover point for the crew. Ellis was about to become a division point for the Union Pacific. (halfway between Kansas City and Denver)
